Powerful Earthquake struck Central Italy in the break of Dawn
L’Aquila, Italy – A strong earthquake measuring 6.3 on the Richter scale rattled the city of L’Aquila, central of Italy in the early morning of 6 April 2009 at 0130 GMT. Surrounding towns were affected by the quake as well.

The cause of the earthquake was believed to be the result of the Eurasian plate sliding past the African plate as most of the recent earthquakes in the region had happened in the southern side of Italy where the two plates lies.

So far, it is confirmed that there are at least 289 people dead and with thousands of people injured who are currently seeking treatment. The live-consuming earthquake has also made as many as tens of thousands of people in Italy homeless and the authorities are busy working to find them shelter and necessary supplies such as food and water before nightfall. Several buildings such as a university dormitory, some churches and a bell tower had collapsed due to the great impact while other buildings had been severely damaged. Currently, phone and power lines are still down and the communication between the rescue agencies has been hampered and rescue work made difficult.

The Italian government has promised the citizens that help will be provided and a field hospital will be set up to help local medical services in treating the injured.

The death rate could have been lower if more people were evacuated from the on-set of the first earthquake measuring 4.6 on the Richter scale. The poor construction and building standards were also highlighted as a probably cause for the high death rate in this earthquake. In these two key observations, the government needs to seriously look at the emergency evacuation plan and institute proper building standards for the country.
